This article analyzes the transposition of Directive (EU) 2018/1808 on Audiovisual Media Services into Spain’s new General Law on Audiovisual Communication, approved in 2022. It explores the conceptual framework of modern audiovisual communication and the main innovations introduced by Spanish legislation to adapt to the evolving media landscape, including digital platforms, on-demand services, and influencers. The study focuses on key areas such as the promotion of works in Spain’s official languages, protection of minors from harmful content, advertising regulation, and the inclusion of women’s football and basketball as events of general interest. The article also reflects on the significance of this reform for Latin America, particularly in countries like Peru, where audiovisual regulation remains fragmented. It concludes by advocating for comprehensive and modern legislation that balances the protection of users' rights, cultural promotion, and the responsibilities of new digital actors.
