The purpose of the study was to know and determine the management styles that are key to achieving quality assurance in management by competencies. Educational management is in crisis, a reason that justifies the study to contribute to the optimal selection of suitable directors in the Peruvian educational system. The present study is non-experimental, of a descriptive causal-explanatory nature, cross-sectional and with a quantitative approach. The research is based on a sample of professionals, who are pursuing postgraduate studies in the Master's Degree in University Teaching and Educational Management at the Private University of Tacna. The sample was nonrandom, and was made up of 35 teachers. The technique used was the survey with multiple choice questions with a Likert scale. The instrument was validated with Cronbach's Alpha reliability coefficient, with a value (0.941). The results reveal that there are three key management styles for optimal management by competencies, they are: the management style based on strategic planning (Beta= 43.6%), management based on transformational leadership (Beta=35.2%) and the management style based on a creative attitude (Beta=34.7%). It is deduced from the study that the quality of management of a school by competencies is strongly associated (R=0.973) with the management styles of the directors who currently have that responsibility.
