Abstract

The presence of a child with a disability in the family becomes an influential factor in the family dynamics, because they go through a long process of adaptation. This fact generates or entails the presence of stress and overload that can have consequences on the physical and mental health of caregivers. Objective To determine the relationship between overload and some modes of coping with stress in caregivers of children with disabilities cared for in a Stimulation and Therapy Center. Material and Methods A quantitative approach, with a correlational research. The sample is 70 participants with a non-probabilistic sampling, constituted by caregivers of children with disabilities. The instruments were test-type surveys: Zarit Caregiver Overload Scale and Stress Coping Questionnaire in parents and caregivers of children with disabilities. Result; the level of intense overload predominates in the surveyed caregivers, with 72.9%; on the other hand, 28 caregivers have a medium level of negative self-focused coping, represented by 40%, in addition 34 caregivers have a high level of positive reappraisal coping, represented by 48.6%, Conclusion, there is a relationship between overload and some modes of coping to stress in caregivers of children with disabilities.
