Cervical pain syndrome due to orthodontic treatment in patients with dental malocclusion class II and III

Abstract

Objective: Determine whether the cervical pain syndrome according to the Mckenzie Method is present in patients with orthodontic treatment treated at the Dental CEPROD Clinic of the city of Tacna in 2017. Materials and Methods: Observational-descriptive study with retrospective cross-sectional design. In patients with orthodontic treatment due to dental malocclusion class II and III, with a total sample of 60 patients to whom the Cervical Pain Syndrome Evaluation Card was applied. Results: 85.00% of the patients presented cervical pain syndrome; affecting both types of dental malocclusion, most often in class II. The three types of cervical pain syndromes were present, with Postural Syndrome being more frequent. Predominating in patients with treatment greater than one year. The most frequent type of syndrome and treatment time predominated in class II there was no presence of derangement syndrome in patients with treatment time of less than one year due to class III, nor with treatment time greater than one year due to class II. Conclusions: Orthodontic treatment without skeletal muscle preparation caused cervical pain syndrome, due to the change in posture produced by the fixed appliances required to restore the morphological and functional balance of the mouth. It predominated in patients with treatment after one year, because they presented greater postural change with respect to the skull-jaw complex and cervical spine. The Postural Syndrome was the most frequent and the major symptomatology in class II, due to the position they presented before the orthodontic treatment.
