Objectives:The objective of this investigation was to determine and compare masticatory performance in patients with class I, II-1, II-2, III malocclusions; attended at the dental teaching clinic of the Private University De Tacna.
Materials and method: The study was prospective, analytical and observational. The sample consisted of 40 patients, categorized according to the Angle malocclusion classification. The selection was made based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the academic periods corresponding to the semesters 2017 - II and 2018 - I. The diagnosis of the type of malocclusion was clinical. The masticatory function was analyzed by means of the masticatory performance (sieving test using an artificial feed, silicone, zetaplus®) and for the categorization we used the index of Edlund j. Y Yamm Cj.
Results: When comparing the masticatory performance in the three malocclusions, it was observed that class I malocclusion obtained higher percentage, followed by class II division 2, class II division 1 and finally class III with the lowest percentages; There were significant differences between class I and class II division 2 with class II division 1 and class III.
Conclusion: Malocclusion alone does not condition patients to have low masticatory performance.
