Abstract

Objective: To identify the aesthetic perception of dental surgeons, orthodontists and common people to different types of facial profiles modified by a design program according to the analysis of Arnett and Bergman in the city of Tacna.

Materials and Methods: The population consisted of 236 dental surgeons, 28 orthodontists and 382 common people from the city of Tacna. For this work, each evaluating group provided their aesthetic perception of silhouettes of the lower facial third in which the angle of the facial profile, nasolabial angle and subnasal-pogonion line was manipulated according to the analysis of Arnett and Bergman. These were orders from 1 to 7 being Unpleasant (1 and 2), Acceptable (3 and 4) and Pleasant (5, 6 and 7).

Results: the group of orthodontists considered the profile to be more pleasant to the F profile (decreased nasolabial angle), the dentists and ordinary people coincided in their perceptions of the most pleasant profile B (standard / class- I).Regarding the most unpleasant profile, the three groups of this study agree on which profile g-facial angle increased, as the most unpleasant profile. However, there is less significant difference between the perceptions of dental surgeons and orthodontists.

Conclusions: the preferences of ordinary people and dental surgeons are generally in agreement with a profile with standard values/class I according to the analysis of Arnett and Bergman, unlike the orthodontists who consider a slightly protrusive profile more pleasant. However, minor differences were found in the classification between the group of dentists and orthodontists.
